Lesotho (Once called Basutoland) became a British protectorate in
1868 when Chief Moshesh sought protection against the Boers
(White Dutch settlers of Southern Africa). Independence came on
October 4, 1966. Elections were suspended in 1970. Over 50% of
GNP (Gross National Product) is provided by citizens working in
South Africa. Livestock is the chief industry and diamonds are
the chief export. On January 1, 1986, South Africa imposed a
blockade because of Lesotho's giving sanctuary to rebel groups
fighting to overthrow the South African Government. The blockade
sparked a January 20th military coup and on January 25th the
blockade was lifted when the new leaders agreed to expel the
rebels. @
